How to prepare for the Goethe B2 exam - a step-by-step plan

The Goethe-Zertifikat B2 exam has four parts: Lesen (reading), Hören (listening), Schreiben (writing), and Sprechen (speaking). Each requires a slightly different strategy - and it's strategy, not just language knowledge, that most often decides the result.

Lesen and Hören - train under time pressure

These parts don't just test comprehension - they test whether you'll finish in time. The most common mistake is trying to understand every single word instead of grasping the overall meaning. Train on exam-like materials and keep an eye on the clock from your very first practice attempt.

Schreiben - structure matters more than vocabulary

Examiners primarily assess text structure (introduction, arguments, conclusion) and coherence, only then vocabulary richness. Mastering a handful of universal connecting phrases (einerseits… andererseits…, zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen…) earns more points than showing off rare vocabulary in a chaotic text.

Sprechen - the part that causes the most stress

In my experience, the speaking part causes the most anxiety - unfairly so, because it's the easiest to prepare for through sheer speaking practice. In lessons, we precisely simulate the exam format: presenting a topic, arguing for and against, and joint planning with a partner (one part of the B2 exam is a paired task).

A 3-month plan before the exam

  • Month 1: diagnosis - a full mock test, to see which part hurts the most.
  • Month 2: work on weak points + regular speaking practice in every lesson.
  • Month 3: mock tests under time pressure + polishing the speaking part.

If you already have an exam date set, the best place to start is a consultation - together we'll build a plan matched exactly to the number of weeks you have left.
